A Record Sargassum Season, and What It Does to a Guest Credential
Sargassum is discussed as a beach problem and a public-relations problem. It is also, quietly, a credential problem: when the shoreline is unusable for a week, guest movement redistributes onto the pool deck, and the wear pattern of everything issued at check-in changes with it.
The season, as reported.
Infobae reported nine million metric tonnes of sargassum accumulated across the Caribbean between 1 January and 30 June 2026 — above the 8.3 million tonnes recorded over the same period in 2025, and far above the 1.2 million tonnes of 2024. Revista Mercado reported Punta Cana and Bávaro among the areas concentrating the largest accumulations this season, with landfall reaching the Playa Bávaro area as of late July 2026.
The same reporting is clear that arrival is not uniform. Neighbouring beaches can differ sharply and conditions change day to day with wind and current, and many resort complexes run permanent collection programmes that keep large sections of beach in usable condition through much of the year.
Where the guests go instead.
When a stretch of shoreline is closed for collection, the guests who would have been on it are on the pool deck, in the spa and at the bar. For a property running a card at the room door and a band for water-facing zones, that shift concentrates use on the band and increases the number of wet-to-dry cycles it goes through in a day.
It also increases handling of the credential by staff. More guests in a smaller area means more visual checks, more re-reads at the bar, and more of the small physical wear that decides whether a band lasts a seven-night stay or gets replaced on night four.
What survives a heavy season, and what does not.
Sargassum landfall brings organic matter, sand and a distinctly abrasive shoreline environment. It does not affect the chip. What it affects is the printed surface and the closure — the same two failure points that salt spray and sun cream attack, only accelerated.
The practical consequences are unglamorous. Sealed silicone constructions handle it; fabric bands worn continuously through it do not do as well. Printed detail on a light background shows organic staining sooner than the same design on a mid-tone. And a collection programme that runs heavy machinery on the beach at dawn is a reason to keep guest credentials visually distinct from contractor and staff credentials, so a beach team can read the difference without stopping.

Put it in the brief
Plan the water-facing credential for the worst weeks rather than the average ones. A band specified for a calm shoreline and a band specified for a heavy sargassum season are not the same construction, and the difference shows up as replacement volume rather than as a complaint.
