The Dominican Hotel Sustainability Targets, and What They Ask of a Supplier
A sustainability target set for a hotel becomes, some months later, a documentation request sent to that hotel's suppliers. This briefing is about the second half of that sentence: what a property under these targets actually needs from whoever prints its cards and bands, and what we will and will not put in writing.
The five targets, as reported.
A roadmap launched with UN Environment sets five objectives for hotels in the country: reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030 against 2020 levels, reduce non-renewable energy use by 25%, halve food waste, fully eliminate single-use plastics, and adopt a sustainability certification.
These are the hotel sector's targets, not ours. We report them here because they shape what a property will ask a supplier for, not because a supplier inherits them by writing them down.
What actually lands on a supplier.
Of the five, two reach a credential order. The single-use plastics objective raises the material question, and the certification objective raises the documentation question — because a certification scheme audits a supply chain, and the credential line item will eventually be looked at by someone with a checklist.
What survives that look is narrow and specific: what the material is, what the construction is, who produced it, and for which order. What does not survive is a broad environmental claim, because the first thing an auditor does with a broad claim is ask for the evidence behind it.
The discipline that protects the property.
We supply material composition information for the run we produce, and nothing beyond it. A property should publish what the material is and what it does — recycled content is a fact about an input, a disposal route is a fact about a specific facility — and should not convert either into a carbon or a general environmental claim.
This is not caution for its own sake. A property that publishes a narrow, accurate, documented statement about its key cards is in a strong position under any framework. A property that published a broad green claim about them is in a weak one, and the supplier who encouraged that claim is the reason why.
What plastic recovery looks like in practice.
The sector is not only setting targets. Arecoa reported a collaborative PET separation, collection and recovery model running in Santo Domingo hotels, with 16 properties in a first pilot phase, more than 350 people trained in recycling and more than 14,500 pounds of material recovered.
The number worth noticing there is 350 people trained. A recovery programme is an operational habit before it is a material specification — which is the same reason a key-card collection process at check-out does more for a property's numbers than a change of card material does.

Put it in the brief
Ask for documentation of the exact construction you are ordering, and publish only what that documentation supports. Anything broader transfers risk from the supplier to the property, which is the wrong direction.
